Psychotherapy and Counselling

Every negative experience holds the seeds of transformation”

What is Psychotherapy and Counselling?

Psychotherapy and Counselling are ‘Talking Therapies and offer you a space in which to explore your feelings and thoughts to gain insight into any psychological, emotional or behavioral issue that you may be struggling with.

The therapeutic relationship is unique in that it may be the first time where you may have formed a relationship or connection with another person, where your feelings, thoughts or ideas have truly been heard, understood and valued, without a need to censor yourself or worry about fear of judgement.

Psychotherapy and Counselling can really help you to gain greater self-awareness and acceptance of who you are. When you have a better understanding of any challenge you face, it gives you the hope and clarity you need to overcome them.

Why seek Psychotherapy and Counselling?

People seek Psychotherapy and Counselling for many different reasons. It is usually when your current ways of coping are no longer working.

You might be feeling overwhelmed by current circumstances or have difficulty coming to terms with the past.

There might be a long standing pattern of behaviour and way of responding that appear to be keeping you stuck.

Or you might feel like you’re on an emotional roller coaster and desperately want to regain a sense of  balance in your life.

Psychotherapy and Counselling are used to work through many different emotional and psychological problems. These are some of the areas I have successfully helped clients to work through:

  • Stress/Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Relationship issues
  • Self-esteem & self-confidence
  • Physical/Sexual/Emotional Abuse
  • Trauma & PTSD
  • Childhood issues
  • Chronic illness
  • Addiction
  • Life transitions

The emphasis throughout therapy is on working together and working through. It can help you to develop and strengthen your inner resources, develop more effective coping mechanisms and help you to find solutions to regain a sense of control, autonomy, emotional and psychological wholeness.

How can it help me?

Psychotherapy and Counselling can have many long lasting, positive effects including:

  • Gaining a fresh perspective on an issue
  • Develop a better understanding of your emotions
  • Develop new ways of thinking
  • Change destructive behaviours
  • Improve relationships with others
  • Promote self-esteem
  • Heal and let go of the past
  • Define and actualize your goals
  • Find new coping strategies
  • Recover from Trauma
  • Develop a more optimist view of life

Psychotherapeutic Approaches I work with

Research has shown that the relationship between therapist and client is always the most important element of any type of therapy, regardless of how a therapist might work. How you are able to connect, trust and engage with each other, helps to create a strong alliance from which you can feel ‘contained’ as you share your most authentic self.

As an Integrative Therapist I combine various modalities depending on what you need from therapy. You may want to focus more on the finding solutions to current problems that are impacting your thinking and behaviours using CBT or SFBT.

Or you may want a greater understanding of self and factors that have shaped who you are and want to explore history, attachments and relationships through Psychodynamic and TA approaches

Sometimes having an empathetic listener can be all that is needed to help you gain a different perspective and provide comfort through a difficult time so that you don’t have to face challenges alone.

You may find it helpful to have a little information about the different psychotherapeutic approaches I work with so that you can decide what might work best for you.

You can follow the links to the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) website where you will find an overview of what they are and how they differ.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Transactional Analysis (TA)

Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Positive Psychology

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

I offer both short-term and longer term, psychotherapy and counselling depending on what you may bring.

There are no set number of sessions, as this depends on both the individual problem and on the approach used.

Sessions are reviewed continuously to ensure they are meeting your needs.
