Breaking Habits

“The secret of change is to focus all your energy NOT on fighting the old but on BUILDING the New”

How habits work

We are all pretty much creatures of habit. We perform numerous tasks each day without having to consciously spent too much time thinking about it.

But when these habits involve behaviour’s such as overeating, smoking, drinking too much, they can be detrimental to your well-being. It can feel more like the habit now controls you, rather than it being a choice it once was.

The behaviour that at first served a purpose, for instance the glass of wine at the end of a stressful day to help you unwind, or that indulgent extra slice of cake because you deserve a treat, has now become an automatic repetitive go to. In other words, has now become a habit and the reward pathway in the brain has made the connection that wine equals stress relief and anticipates the reward, repeating the behaviour over and over again.

If you want to change a habit, you have to modify the behaviour patterns associated with it. And one of the most effective way to break an unwanted habit, is to replace it with a new one. Engaging with a new behaviour that meets your needs in a healthier way and learning better ways of coping so that you rely on the habit less and less.

Are you Ready for Change?

The first step to eliminating unwanted habits is to assess your readiness for change. The Cycle of Change is a concept that explores where you are in relation to implementing the desired change.

Notice how ACTION is number four on the cycle. This illustrates the stages necessary before implementing the new behaviour, to give you the best chance of succeeding and breaking the habit.

You may be just at the start of the cycle, perhaps not ready to acknowledge that your habit has become a problem (COMTEMPLATION). Or you might be lacking the motivation or belief that without the habit, you will find yourself struggling to manage stressful situations (PREPERATION).

I can help you to work through the cycle so that you when it comes to taking ACTION, you will be ready to let go of the habit with ease and with the realization that rather than giving something up, you will be gaining a sense of freedom and control.

I will also help you look at ways in which you will MAINTAIN the changed habit through forming positive new behaviours and support you to manage any RELAPSE so that you no longer slip back into the old habit.

Changing a habit is a process that requires commitment, time and a willingness to succeed but the end result could be one that gives you a healthier more productive lifestyle, greater self-confidence and a sense of achievement.
